Three years have come and gone. So very much has happened during that time. Lucas and I had never imagined that we’d ever end up here on this rock. But the military has never disappointed us with the places we’ve landed…Hawaii has been no different. We’ve watched our children grow with leaps and bounds here, witnessed births and marriages and heartaches, spent time in some of the most beautiful places that nature has to offer, made decisions that would change our lives forever, took steps to better prepare ourselves for the future… It has definitely been a place of growth and discovery…. A place we will never forget.
We first arrived in the Aloha State in January of 2010. Immediately, we began taking advantage of the beaches, the hikes, the food, and the weather. Friends came fast and quickly turned into our close knit circle of beach buddies, weekend hobbyists, and party friends. We became known as “The Hawaii Crew,” and “The Clique.” None of us cared much. We were living it up.
Riley was saved and baptized that year, Lucas bought his first dirt bike, he promoted, a long string of dress up parties began, we hiked, saw fireworks over Navy ships, and I started my first semester at University of Hawaii.
2011 started out with a bang. Lucas and I celebrated ten years of marriage in January! We celebrated by taking a limousine out for the night (our first time ever,) and then flying over the island of Oahu in powered hang gliders. The year was filled with friends and more dress up. Michele and I hiked all summer long. There was camping and more classes at UH. Friends started to come and go and we continued to enjoy Hawaii as much as possible.
2012…our last year on this gorgeous rock. Life took a handful of unexpected turns this year, as well as marked some major milestones for Lucas and I… we both turned thirty! We made the decision early on in the year to end Lucas’ working relationship with the military, and I-unexpectedly-found out that I have clinical depression. It has been a crazy roller coaster, dealing with it all, and in front of our friends. But God has had my back and has definitely been in the driver’s seat.
I finally graduated with my bachelor’s degree from the University of Hawaii, Lucas took up scuba diving like it was going out of style, and both of our bebes had their first boyfriends.
It is so bittersweet…leaving this place. There have been so many big changes for us, so many wonderful memories made. I’ve definitely done some major self-discovery here and I will always remember the lessons I’ve learned. Mostly, it will be these people that I remember when I think of Hawaii. My military companions, my neighbors, my friends….my family. It would have not been the same without you all. You have all made your own unique marks on my life and I can absolutely say that I am all the better for it.
Aloha, Yall! It’s been great.
